Elevation Gain: 1000 feet

Description: Black Mountain, namesake of Mountain View, CA, forms the headwaters to Adobe, Permanente, and Stevens Creeks. Rocks on the peak have been moving for 100 million years from the Sea of Cortez (the mountain is on the San Andreas Fault). From the peak at 2,800 feet, a clear day offers spectacular views of Santa Clara Valley and the Mount Hamilton Range, as well as the coast. First, a relaxing cruise through grasslands, up past the backpacker camp to the peak. Then down Indian Creek Trail to the shady canyon of Stevens Creek on the Stevens Creek nature trail, and back up to the parking lot. Sorry, no dogs allowed. 

Bring/Wear: Lunch, water (at least one liter), hat, layers (expect fog, wind, and/or bright sun), sunscreen. Hiking shoes recommended.

Alternative Meeting Place #1: 10 am at Monte Bello Open Space Preserve parking lot, 4301 Page Mill Rd, Los Altos CA 94022. I-280 S to Page Mill Rd exit (Exit 20 in Los Altos Hills), then immediate right onto Page Mill Rd. Go west 7 miles to parking lot on left. Page Mill Rd is steep and winding; please respect bicyclists and share the road with them.
